Jesse Regnier Nicole Williamson Olivia Hanson Winner - Overall Male Winner - Overall Female Winner - Fun Run | Hatfield 5K nets more than $3,250 for town's schools A total of 154 runners and walkers turned out to participate in the Fourth Annual Hatfield Education Foundation 5K SmartRun Sunday May 3, 2009 in Hatfield, raising more than $3,250. The event is sponsored by HEF to benefit the town's public schools. The Foundation was especially pleased to report a 32% increase in participation this year. "Considering the hard economic times, these numbers shout success in a big way," said Bernie Motyka, past HEF President and Hatfield native. "Thanks to the generosity of sponsors, donors and participants, the foundation can continue to support a wide variety of educational programs in the elementary school and the high school in Hatfield. We were especially thrilled at the impact of our new SmartRun Challenge for participants who collected individual sponsorships. Winner Kristin Kociela did an amazing job and helped us raise an additional $141!" The SmartRun of 2009 featured three events: a 5k run and walk, as well as a one-mile FunRun for children 12 and under. U Mass cross-country runner Jesse Regnier took first place with a time of 15:51. A native of Hampden, Mass., and a 2005 graduate of Ludlow High School, Regnier was co-captain of the UMass Men's Cross Country Team in 2007, and a two-time selection to the Western Massachusetts Cross Country First-Team (in 2003 and 2004). According to HEF's Motyka, the foundation is a unique community nonprofit that supports innovative projects and initiatives in the two schools located in one the state's smallest school district. Each year, the foundation makes grant awards totaling at least $10,000 to the schools. Yearly fundraising events include the SmartRun on the first Sunday in May and an Annual Coed Softball Tournament held in July. The Foundation also co-produces a student musical each spring in conjunction with the two schools.
